North Eastern Region Biotechnology Programme Management Cell

MapNER-BPMC of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, has been proactively launching several regions specific programmes with the intervention of biotechnology in NER. These programems are towards skill development/human resource development, research infrastructure creation, flagship R&D programmes and specific network programmes targeting local issues including entrepreneurship development.

  • Managing North Eastern Region Biotechnology Programme Management Cell (NER-BPMC) of DBT since 2009-10 aimed at holistic biotech based development of North Eastern Region of India

  • BCIL assisting DBT through NER-BPMC in conceptualizing, implementing, mentoring and monitoring of the innovative programmes in NER


NER-BPMC Key Outcomes

A. Skill Development Programmes in NER

  • More than 200 Overseas Associateship awarded
  • 126 biotech hubs established in NER; more than 1700 students trained
  • 35 scientists awarded visiting research professorship
  • Biotech laboratories established at 88 senior secondary schools


B. Infrastructure Development in NER

  • Centre for Excellence in Agri biotech at Jorhat and Fisheries Biotechnology at Tripura established
  • 32 units of excellence created in NER Institutions
  • Facilities set-up for advance R&D on Yak, Mithun and Pig
  • Molecular diagnostic labs created at 11 medical colleges in NER
  • Production facility for value addition in jackfruit, citrus established


C. Innovative R&D

  • 650 twinning projects supported
  • 1500 scientific manpower trained
  • Network Programmes on Chemical Ecology, MDR-TB program, Scented Rice (Joha & Black Rice), NER Banana, Orchid Bioresources, Integrated Herbal Medicines, Jackfruit and Citrus etc.
  • More than 400 scientific papers published in peer reviewed journals


D. Entrepreneurship Development in NER

  • “Technology Incubation Centre for Entrepreneurship Development in Mushroom Culture and Farming” established at Bodoland University, Assam
  • Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs) organized in NER states
